OZOMATLI TO PERFORM IN INDIA AND NEPAL AS U.S. CULTURAL AMBASSADORS
posted on 02.06.2007
Since their inception over ten years ago, Ozomatli's mission has been to globally spread a message of peace and understanding through diversity in music. From February 11th thru 21st, Ozomatli will be extending their devotion to polyglot urban sound clashing all the way to India and Nepal, representing the United States as Cultural Ambassadors on a Fullbright-Hays grant from the State Department.
As guests of the US Embassy in India, the three time Grammy award winning band will take part in free public concerts, musical workshops, master classes, and community outreach. The theme of the program is music education, devised to appeal to Indian youth, and to advance mutual understanding between the United States and India.
They will be visiting the Arya Anathalaya Orphanage and School, the Prayas Juvenile Aid Center and the Ravi Shankar Institute for Music and Performing Arts in New Delhi. They will also have the unique opportunity to perform the first ever live concert at Nek Chand's Rock Garden in Chandiargh, a sculpture garden and amphitheatre built entirely of industrial waste items, and a world ecological landmark.
In Nepal, the theme will be "Unity in Diversity", to celebrate the newly ratified Peace Accord, ending 10 years of turmoil and isolation. They will be doing various workshops through the Umbrella Foundation, an organization that works with 5 orphanages which are currently overrun with children who have been affected by the last 10 years of conflict. They will also work with local student / youth musical groups on the theme "Constructive Ways To Make Your Voices Heard", teaching disenfranchised youth ways to integrate their social messages into music.
Ozomatli are an LA based, multiethnic, multiracial group who are a living example that music can transcend any cultural or social boundary. Ozomatli has long been devoted to outreach and community involvement, and these performances and workshops - in Delhi, Bangalore, Chandigarh and Kathmandu - are a further extension of that commitment.
Ozomatli releases their fourth full length studio album, "Don't Mess With The Dragon" April 3rd in the US on Concord Records.

December 3, 2005
Ozo just played our second of three sold-out shows at the Fillmore tonight, it was awesome as usual. What a great venue and great atmosphere.
Recently played up in Vancouver and got to hang with Kim Urhahn, David, and Ronn Dunnett. I just added some great new pics courtesy of Ronn- thanks for letting me use them man! Great work!
Ozo Wins Latin Grammy!

November 3, 2005
Ozomatli won the Latin Grammy tonight in the field of "Best Alternative Album". It is very humbling to receive the type of recognition we have for our latest album, and to be acknowledged by your peers yet again in this way is awesome!

If you have DirectTV, you'll be able to catch Ozomatli during the month of October on "Freeview". Try channel 124 for that!
I mostly watch 202, 204, 331, 333, 335, 337, and 229 if you can believe it. Sometimes I might throw in a little 236 but that channel can get out of hand pretty quickly. Of course, 206, 207 and the like are very important this time of year being that I'm totally into FFB.
Know what I'm sayin'????

Driving in the rain
-
September 21, 2005
Don't get me wrong, I love the rain, just not driving in it. People in LA have no clue what to do when there's weather of any kind... Yesterday I went down to Paiste and hung with my friend Rich Mangicaro. We listened to some great new stuff and I grabbed a couple cymbals that should come in handy soon..
I'm looking forward to doing a lot of recording in the upcoming weeks- Work begins soon on a new Ozo album - Look out!! I've also been working with the wonderful and talented Jessica Callahan on her new album. What's up Jessica!!!
Hope you are all well, I'm gonna go hit some things!
from the road in SLO
-
September 17, 2005
Just played in SLO and Ozo got down for the kids...We got a handwritten note from a student while were playing that said "George Bush Hates Midgets". Someone handed it to me between songs and I almost fell off my seat laughing. Now if someone has ACTUAL proof that GW holds some prejudice against little people, send it to me....Meanwhile we're off to Earthdance, where I hope to not freeze as much I did last year. It really helps to play your instrument when you can actually move your fingers... See ya!!!
Latin Grammy Nominations
-
August 24, 2005
We were all honored to find out yesterday that Ozomatli has been nominated for 2 Latin Grammy awards: Best Alternative Album and Best Engineered Album, both for the album "Street Signs". The awards will held in LA on Nov. 3rd. I am keeping my fingers crossed for our great trio of engineers: Robert Carranza, Anton Pushansky, and Serban Ghenea. They are all incredibly worthy and I would love to see them recognized!
